With summer coming, you’re probably thinking, I need three more weeks at SoulCycle before pulling out that swimsuit. And I totally understand, really I do. But in between the exercise routine and the salads, consider your beauty routine for a moment. Taking care of your skin all year is a must, but there are special considerations that come with the changing season. Here are 3 Top Summer Beauty Tips to keep your skin in great shape.
Lighten up on the makeup – I know beauty YouTubers are telling you to do multiple layers of foundation and contouring; and waterproof makeup is a “thing”, but no one needs that much makeup for hiking. And your skin needs to breathe more in summer than ever. If you want to wear foundation, try applying a thin layer of our mineral powder and then misting lightly with a toner. If you’re using our cream-to-powder foundation, apply it with a damp sponge only in the places where you need to even out your complexion. For me, that’s around my mouth and chin. Just make sure the color matches perfectly. Add a dab of concealer and some mascara and you’re set to go! Instead of applying powder during the day over sweat (ewww), carry a little tissue paper (totally cheap, DIY trick!) to dab away sweat and shine.
Choose a healthy sunscreen – Okay, you should be using sunscreen all year. But if you’re out and about twice as much in the summer, you’ve upped the ante. If you’re like me, going to the store to purchase sunscreen creates sensory overload. There are literally hundreds of brands, all in brightly colored tubes lining shelf after shelf. But once I realized most of them have awful ingredients that could cause cancer (which is the very thing I’m trying to avoid by buying sunscreen!), it made my choices a lot easier. Here’s how I’ll make your choice easier!
Shower immediately after hitting up the pool – For a while, I was getting in the pool nearly every day at the gym, which was great for exercise, but not so much for my skin. I was getting serious dry patches that looked like eczema, even though I was rinsing off after swimming. It turns out rinsing isn’t enough. You need to use soap and wash for 15 minutes, followed by a good body cream that will replenish the moisture lost from the chlorine. Here’s a rundown of the problems continual exposure to chlorine can cause and how to counter them.
Bonus tips! If you’re drinking less than 8 ounces of water a day, get cracking! Your skin needs even more hydration in the summer. If you have really sensitive skin and you’ll be out in the sun a lot, try sun protective clothing. I use this brand and LOVE them.
